Our Demand for a State is Legitimate - Igbomina Conference

Date: 2012-08-27

The demand for Igbomina State is a legitimate process for self determination and unification of the people of Igbomina of Kwara State and Osun States, recognized by both the local and international laws. This declaration was made by the National Coordinator of Igbomina Conference on Constitutional Review,  Mr Olaitan Oyin-Zubar in a statement.

Oyin-Zubar stated that the constitutional provision of Nigeria constitution on freedom of association is in tandem with international law on the right of a people to live where they wish to belong.

He added that it was on this basis that the people of Igbomina decided to renew their aged long desire to be united and live together as a people with common ancestral root and aspirations, the situations, which he said, will enhance better understanding and promote the rapid development of their areas.

The coordinator who traced the struggle to 1946 maintained that the unification of the people is realizable under the ongoing constitutional review adding that the people will leave no stone unturned to achieve desired result. He lamented the separation of the people by the colonial officials, which according to him, was made possible on the basis of leadership sentiments deployed to trick Igbomina people on the issue of who becomes, “Head Chief of Igbomina “ if the then Igbomina South and Igbomina North were merged.

Oyin-Zubair disclosed that by 1938, the “grievous mistake” of lumping Igbomina of Kwara State with other groups soon manifested when Sir Donald Cameron publicly proclaimed the merger as a failure.

Quoting from a document titled,”Principles of a Native Administration and their Application 1938”, Mr Oyin-Zubair stated that Sir Cameron also regretted the forced merger as “adversely affecting the progress of the Igbomina people”.

Part of the paper according to him reads, ”It must have been a serious mistake that these people are still in Northern Nigeria. These Communities in the Northern Province should have probably made greater progress if they had been allowed to develop in accordance with their own tribal institutions, however primitive, under the direct guidance of an administrative officer instead of a small part of a larger administration, under a district head often alien to themselves and the district officers”.

Mr Oyin-Zubair enjoyed Igbomina people to be ready to pay the necessary sacrifice for the economic and political emancipation of the people rather than being in “perpetual slavery”.

In the meantime, the Movement For Creation of Igbomina State has set up various Committees to pursue the state creation project. The Committees are Contact Committee headed by Chief Sir Ayo Oyinloye, Finance Committee headed by Mr Olu Adeyemi, the Technical Committee heded by Dr Dele Gege and Media and Research Committee headed by Mr Ayo Omole respectively.
