Police in Kwara debunk claims of killer GSM number in Ilorin, Omu-Aran
The police in Kwara have debunked the rumour and the text messages warning people not to pick calls from a particular GSM number.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that text messages warning people not to answer calls from a particular number because it killed one man at Omu-Aran in Irepodun Local Government of Kwara and four others in Ilorin have been going round town.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Olufemi Fabode, told NAN in Ilorin on Wednesday that claims in the text messages were not true and that members of the public should discountenance them and go about their business without fear.
Fabode said that no death connected with the use of GSM calls had been reported in Ilorin or Omu-Aran by anybody.
He said, "It is not true that people have died because they received or picked their calls on the phone handsets, particularly in Kwara.
"The command had investigated the claims of death in Ilorin and Omu-Aran and had found out that they were false."
Fabode urged members of the public not to panic or entertain any fear over the claims because "they are not true", adding that all attempts to put a call through to the said number had not succeeded.
NAN reports that series of text messages were circulated around the country warning people not to pick calls from GSM number 08061197911 because it killed four persons at Ilorin and one in Omu-Aran.
The text messages have created some anxieties in Omu-Aran and Ilorin since Tuesday.
