Tourism Meeting in Ilorin: Let's embrace 'Do the Right Thing' Programme

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation has recommended that the philosophy and charge of "Do the Right Thing” be adopted by all Nigerians in both their public and private lives.

It said this in a communiqué reached at the end of the 8th meeting of the National Council on Tourism, Culture and National Orientation, which held in Ilorin, Kwara state, with the theme "Leveraging Tourism, Culture and National Orientation for National Peace and Unity.” The meeting was attended by 286 representatives from 25 states of the Federation, the Federal Capital Territory, and other stakeholders in the sector.

The Honourable Minister of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation, High Chief Edem Duke, led a delegation of state commissioners, permanent secretaries and heads of agencies of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation from the federal and state levels on a courtesy call to the Emir of Ilorin, His Royal Majesty, Dr. Ibrahim Sulu Gambari, where he expressed the appreciation of the council for the warmth of the government and people of Kwara state. He also assured His Royal Majesty that the meeting would devise enduring strategies for ensuring that Nigerians live in harmony.

The Emir commended the minister for the great work he was doing and prayed that the outcome of the council's deliberation would contribute immensely in transforming Nigeria.

In his opening speech, the minister enjoined the council to take far reaching decisions that would significantly reposition the culture/tourism sector for better performance.

A total of 53 memoranda/reports were submitted to the Council for consideration and adoption.

After consideration of the various memoranda and reports presented by the technical committee, the council concluded that; there is a need for the establishment of Tourism Development Fund (TDF), to stimulate investments in the sector and to be funded by the federal government, identified private sector players as well as grants from multinational organisations; the council recommends to the Federal Ministry of Education the inclusion of the study of Nigeria's Cultural Heritage in the Curriculum of Primary and Secondary schools; states explore public private partnership option in constructing/reconstructing roads leading to important tourism/cultural sites; the first and second stanzas of the National Anthem be sung properly at all official functions and that prayers said at such functions reflect the mood of the nation; and that the philosophy and charge of "Do the Right Thing” be adopted by all Nigerians in both their public and private lives; among others.
