PDP, ACN Feud over Alleged Threat to Peace in Kwara

Date: 2012-09-04

The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged a plot by the opposition Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) to disrupt the prevailing peace in the state.

Through its Secretary, Yemi Afolayan, the PDP claimed that the ACN had been instigating some traditional rulers, labour activists and civil servants against the Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed administration and the ruling party.

The PDP therefore urged the opposition party to refrain from further "sponsored acts,"which could heat up the polity.

But the state’s ACN Acting Chairman, Kayode Olawepo, described the PDP’s allegations as not only baseless and advised the ruling party to "perform its constitutional duties to the people of the state rather than crying wolves where none exists.”

Addressing reporters yesterday at Omu Aran, Irepodun Local Council, Afolayan said ACN could not be exonerated from recent constant negative reports and instigation of the people against the state government and the PDP.

He spoke at the Fola Ajike/Saraki Forum, where prayers were held for the doyen of politics in the state, Dr. Olusola Saraki, his son, Senator Bukola Saraki and Governor Ahmed.

"We are aware of the propaganda by the ACN of its alleged incursion into Kwara politics. This is nothing but a blatant lie. We are aware of a few people, who are mostly not from the state claiming to be in the opposition. Their case is therefore likened to a satire in George Orwell’s Animal Farm who put beans on top of loads of sand.

"These people sponsored thugs from neighbouring states to cause confusion at the Central Praying Ground, Ilorin during the last Eid-el-Fitiri .

"Besides, the government of PDP in Kwara running to about nine years, it has never received any notice of strike from the workers until recently. We know those behind all these.   These are people who have gone ahead to produce flags of their party and hanged them in various houses including the houses where the owners have died years ago, asserting that they are ACN members," he said.

Afolayan, who warned that Nigeria has had enough of security challenges, advised the ACN to shun "political rascality" in Kwara and leave the decision on the party with more supporters to the electorate.

To Olawepo, "joining issues with the PDP would make us to assume the duty of a serious minded people reacting to blatant lies and baseless accusations from a party that has failed the people but trying to vent its anger on a harmless party like ours.

"We shall not lose our focus to provide the alternative government for the people of the state come the 2015. If the PDP has failed and the workers are protesting where is the hand of the ACN in the matter? Nigerians are watching and we shall soon liberate the people from servitude,"he said.
