Date: 2012-09-21

A mournful atmosphere pervaded the Alapata Compound in Ilorin West LGA on Wednesday afternoon as the remains of Alhaji Kehinde Ajongolo were interred.

He was buried according to Islamic injunctions at about 2pm in his compound at Popo Giwa, Ilorin.

Anjologo, a 65 year-old, was swept into River Akanji while riding on his motorcycle at Akerebiata area of Ilorin by flood caused by a torrential rainfall on Tuesday night.

He was said to be coming from the Main Campus of Kwara State University, Malete, when he met his unfortunate end.

Two other persons were also reportedly drowned in the river, while an 18 seater bus with registration number Kwara XA 805 LRN was also swept into the river by the flood.

At the time of filling this report, the bodies of the two other victims were yet to be recovered. But the body of Ajongolo was retrieved on Wednesday at the bank of the river.

A source told City Rove that the deceased was a contractor with KWASU.

According to an eyewitness, the deceased had initially taken refuge in a building when the rain started. But at about 8pm, he decided to brave the rain and hopped on his bike to head home.

"He discovered that flood had taken over the road and in an attempt to maneuver, he was swept into the river with the motorcycle.

The Aduagba community, which hosts the river also wore mournful look yesterday.

The leader of the community, Alhaji Adewale Rasaq, lamented that many lives had been lost to flood whenever it rains in the area.

He told The Herald that water channel beside MRS filling station was too narrow for the volume of water flowing into the river.

He also stated that letters had been forwarded to both the State and Local Governments on the tragic nature of river Akanji, but to no avail.

He therefore pleaded with the government to as a matter of urgency rescue the people.

Meanwhile, the State Commissioner for Works and Transport, Dr Abubakar Kannike, visited the spot of the incident on Wednesday, where he promised that government would do everything within its reach to put the drainage in the area in proper shape.
