Ilorin: Fuel Scarcity Persists

Date: 2012-09-29

Fuel scarcity in Ilorin continued to take its toll on consumers yesterday as long queues of cars, motorcycles and gallons were noticed at the few filling stations that sold the product to the public.

In our last edition, it was reported that the situation was worsening following the inability of Atlas Cove in Lagos to pump oil to the depots in some states.

The development was caused by the destruction of oil pipelines at Arepo on the outskirt of Lagos by vandals, where four workers of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) were kidnapped and subsequently murdered in the kidnappers' hideout.

Checks by City Rove yesterday in some petrol stations within the Ilorin metropolis revealed that the acute shortage of the commodity had become a nightmare to the users.

At Dola Bimbola petrol station, Tanke Oke-Odo, where the commodity was sold to the public among the six filling stations in Tanke area, long queues of cars took over the road side.

The Manager of the station, Mr. Alimi Abdulrasheed, told our reporters that the station was selling the product at the official price of N97 per litre.

He said consumers were being allowed to come in one after the other owing to security situation.

At MD Ayoka near the Kwara State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Ilorin, petrol was also dispensed at the regulated price of N97.

As at the time our reporters visited the station at about 11:30 am yesterday, 10 cars and 10 motorcycles were being allowed in simultaneously.

The Manager of the station, Mr Bello Kazeem, told City Rove that the station received 11,000 litres of petrol yesterday, adding that the station maintained the official price of N97 per litre of petrol.

However, at Habeeb Global Oil beside Kwara State University contact office on Old Jebba road, a litre of fuel was sold for N110, with short queue of cars.

Speaking with City Rove, the station Manager, Gbemileke Peter, said the station was selling the commodity at N110 per litre because they were lifting fuel from a long distance.
