We Don't Owe Teachers, Says KWSG

Date: 2012-10-05

No teacher is owed salary in Kwara State, the state governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed has said.

Speaking at a Citizens' Forum organized by the National Good Governance Tour team at the Kwara State Banquet Hall, Ilorin yesterday, the governor stressed that teachers welfare is paramount to his administration.

The governor maintained that local government areas in the states were given free hands to operate.

According to him, local governments are given their allocation as at when due. We dont tamper with their funds, except where we have understanding on statutory duties like teachers' salaries, particularly primary school teachers, and traditional rulers among other commitments.

He also told the gathering that his administration had rehabilitated over 600 kilometer urban roads and 300 kilometer rural roads in the last one and a half years.

The intention, he said is to open up every part of the state for development and attract investors to the state.

Governor Ahmed also spoke of his government's intention to give scholarship to students of Kwara State origin who secure admission to the state International Aviation College.
He also disclosed that a masterplan is being built to transfer Shonga model of farming to farmers in the state to encourage best practices and increase production.

Governor Ahmed, who urged Federal government to create a platform to enhance optimal allocation of resources to critical areas, also urged the Federal government to ensure that its projects in the states were maintained by the state governments to guide against wastage.

He praised the federal Ministry of Information and Communication for initiating the tour, saying that it would give the public a picture of what governance is all about.

"This tour is the best thing that has happened to governance because governance is all about people and people ought to know how their resources are being managed".

He also stressed that the tour should be a continuous exercise, adding that nation-building is the responsibility of all citizens.

The Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, had earlier in his remarks praised the government for its giant strides.

Maku, who said the tour was to promote good governance, pointed out that it was not politically motivated or meant for partisan politics.

"The purpose of the tour is true assessment of projects in various states and the challenges.
"It is also to know peoples' views about government since we are in a democracy. And people should be mobilized to be part of governance.

"The job of ruling the any country or state belongs to the people because no President or governor can do miracle unless people support him".
