Pupils on the rampage in Ilorin
Over 200 pupils went on the rampage, barricading some major streets in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, on Friday over an alleged failure of a man identified as an agent to register the pupils for the Senior School Certificate Examination.
The protesting pupils disrupted vehicular movement on Texaco Filling Station at Odota, Ilorin, and demanded a refund of their registration fees from the agent identified as Mr. Kayode Sarafadeen.
Some of them had come with their parents and luggage waiting for the arrival of Sarafadeen.
One of the pupils, who refused to mention his name, told journalists that Sarafadeen was allegedly operating a coaching centre at Eruda Primary School in Ilorin, and had allegedly received N22,000 from each student as registration fee.
According to him, the students discovered on Friday that their names were missing on the list of the candidates that would be conveyed to Alayin Secondary School, in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
He stated that they had converged on the area to demand a refund of the money they paid to the agent.
“We paid N22,000 each to Sarafadden. The agent said he had registered us for the examination. We believed him as he had assisted some of our relatives to even register for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
“We came here today for us to be conveyed to the examination centre, which is part of the agreement, but to our greatest surprise, our names are missing on the list of students that would be conveyed to the examination centre.
“We are now waiting for Sarafadeen to refund us our money. We have been waiting since morning and even though it is about 7pm now, we will continue to wait for him.
“He may go wherever he wants, we will continue to wait for him even if it means sleeping here. He must come and refund us. It is obvious that we are not partaking in the examination, but we would not allow him to get away with it and our money.”
Efforts by our correspondent to get Sarafadeen to respond to the allegations failed as he neither showed up at the coaching centre at about 7.15 pm nor did he pick his calls as his telephone number indicated that it was switched off.
