Man Abducted on Wedding Day Dies

Date: 2012-10-15

Zubairu Abioye Balogun, who was abducted on his wedding day in Ilorin and held on an unknown location for four days, is dead.

He died on Saturday at a private medical centre and was buried according to Islamic rites at the Muslim Cemetery in Ilorin on the same day.

Since he was recovered by a motorcyclist from the spot his abductors had abandoned him two weeks ago, the victim of Balogun Fulani Compound had been confined to his bed at Temitope Hospital in Ilorin, as a result of torture he was believed to have been subjected by his abductors.

When his condition deteriorated at the hospital, a source disclosed that he was conveyed to an undisclosed healing home.

Balogun, better known as Lanre, was kidnapped penultimate Friday and held for four days, until he was discovered by a roadside in a state of coma.

On the day he was abducted, Lanre was to attend the solemnisation of his wedding to his bride at Fagba's Compound, also in Ilorin. The wedding ceremony had started the previous evening with the traditional Aisun Iyawo, or wedding eve vigil, which lasted untill the early hours of the fateful Friday.

Confusion had gripped the Balogun Fulani Compound following his disappearance on the wedding day.

Calls made to his mobile phone were neither picked nor returned.

The following day, the family was alerted by a strange call to a family member that Lanre's remains would be dumped in Kangu, near the Michael Imodu National Institute for Labour Studies in Ilorin.

However at Kangu area, family members who responded to the alert were ordered by a stranger to leave the deserted area or face danger.

However, a commercial motorcyclist called the family the following day on the victim's mobile phone to intimate them that Lanre was found unconscious close to the railway crossing near the same Kangu area.

Lanre died on Saturday after a failed medical battle to save his life. He never fully regained consciousness until his death.

A younger brother to Lanre, Kehinde Balogun, confirmed to City Rove in a telephone chat that his brother had died.

He said the police had yet to uncover the mystery of his abduction or the abductors, describing the death as tragic and a colossal loss to the family.

The spokesman of the Kwara State Police Command, Mr. Femi Fabode, said he was yet to be informed of the death.

He also could not confirm whether an arrest had been made concerning the abduction.
