Inconsistency hinders development - Kwara gov

Date: 2012-02-23

Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed has blamed policy inconsistency for the slow pace of development in Nigeria.

Speaking during the inauguration of Kwara Agriculture Modernisation Master-plan in Ilorin on Wednesday, he said the country would achieve greater development with well articulated and comprehensive development master-plan which should be methodologically and consistently pursued.

He said there was the need for the country to diversify from oil mono-economy to modernised and commercialised agriculture, adding that other sectors should also be harnessed and developed.

Ahmed said Kwara State was poised to lead in the drive to revitalise agriculture as a major foreign exchange earner for the country, achieve food sufficiency and even export to other countries as well as provide employment opportunities for the teeming jobless Nigerian youths.

He said his government was committed to the agriculture partnership with the Cornell University, United States, adding that the project was for five years.

He added that the recent global climatic change had made it imperative for more emphasis to be placed on agriculture as a strategy for development, job provision and wealth creation.

According to him, other members of the team are the University of Ilorin, Kwara State University, Agricultural and Rural Management Training Institute, Ilorin, and National Centre for Agricultural Mechanisation, Ilorin.
