NANS Honours Unilorin Council Chair

Date: 2012-10-29

The Zone 'C' of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has presented a platinum award of excellence to the chairman, Governing Council of the University of Ilorin, Alhaji Saka Sa'adu.

The award, the students' union said, was in recognition of his administrative acumen in the discharge of his duty as pro-chancellor of the university.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali, called for greater synergy between the students' union and the school authority, pointing out that communication was the best solution to any grievances.

Ambali said the university would continue to be friendly with the body as part of efforts to ensure peaceful atmosphere on campus.

He noted that the Federal Government has empowered the institution because of its mandate to teach, research and community development service.

The Unilorin boss said; “Whatever we can do to make your stay in school worthwhile would be done and whatever we find difficult please understand. Our actions have to conform to lay down rules and injunctions of the school documents”.

The leader of the students' body, Comrade Adio Dunjo, explained that the awardee was honoured owing to his unflinching zeal to the betterment of tertiary education in the country.

He said though NANS considers its award sacrosanct, honouring Sa'adu was one of the activities that would remain indelible in the history of time devoid of politics and favouritism.

Dunjo, however, noted that the nation's education is in the lowest ebb due to politics and lackadaisical attitude of those in authority.

He told the gathering that the era of students' unrest was over; saying that progressive partnership between the university and the students' organization must be pursued for the rapid development of ivory tower.

The honoree, Alhaji Saka Sa'adu, described the award as unique, because according to him, 'it was coming from NANS'.

The former Minister of State for Education counseled the union to advance in its academic pursuits, noting that education remains the legacy for tomorrow's generation.

He therefore called on the union to always draw the attention of the school authority to any grievances to avert break down of law and order as being experienced in some higher institutions of learning in the country.
