Govs May Press for More Funds to States

Date: 2012-11-08

Governors under the aegis of the Governors' Forum may have commenced moves to put more pressure on the Federal Government on the need for it to increase its monthly allocations to the states.

The governors, sources told The Guardian on Tuesday in Ilorin, said considering the present huge financial demands at the states level, it would be most appropriate for the Federal Government to adjust its monthly allocation in favour of the states.

The development could be a direct way by the governors to recover parts of the money expended on rehabilitation of federal roads in their states and those spent on security occasioned by the sudden surge in terrorism in the country.

Reacting to the development yesterday at a media chat in Ilorin, Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed confirmed the move, noting that the exigencies of present day governance made it imperative.

According to Ahmed, "at the Governors' Forum, the challenges we are at present facing were not the ones faced by our predecessors. By the time we came on board, the world was faced with the problem of global economic recession.

"Therefore at present the modalities in supporting states financially must be reviewed. What the Federal Government was giving then was higher than what it is giving now."

He added, "we have been putting pressure on the Federal Government to see the current challenges as that requiring more funds. To justify this clamour for more allocations, we need to know that we have more population today than before, and we should also not forget the issue of recent security challenges. So the Federal Government should come to our aid."
