Kwara Assembly raises concern over ravaging flood
Kwara State House of Assembly has urged the State government to come to the aid of victims of flood disaster in the State.
This was part of a resolution on a motion on the need to ameliorate the effects of flooding in communities along the bank of River Niger in Kwara State.
The House asked the government to urgently come to the aid of the victims with the provision of relief materials to cushion the effects.
The legislature also urged the State government to liaise with the Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission, HYPPADEC, and the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, to provide emergency materials for the victims.
Moving the motion, Hon Ahmed Rufai Adam, (Patigi), stated that recently, the people living along the river bank areas in Patigi, lost enormous farm produce and valuables amounting to millions of naira to flood.
He lamented that despite the fact that Patigi is one of the largest producers of rice in Nigeria, the people, especially the rice farmers who live along the river bank areas are constantly faced with the challenge of flooding every rainy season.
DAILY POST recalls that HYPPADEC, last Sunday, distributed N50m relief materials to flood disaster victims in the State at Patigi, Patigi Local Government Area of the State.
Managing Director of the agency, Abubakar Yelwa, at the flag-off of the exercise, disclosed that seven persons have so far lost their lives to flood disaster in different parts of the State.
He decried the poor attitude of people in the riverine communities to warnings by the agency, adding that the body was considering a bill to prohibit people's proximity to riverine areas.
