NURTW Denies Involvement in Offa/Erin-Ile Clash

Date: 2013-01-09

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Kwara State has denied involvement of its members in the violent clash that occurred between Offa and Erin-Ile communities last Saturday.

In a statement made available to journalists in Ilorin on Tuesday and signed by the state chairman, Alhaji Aliyu Issa Ore, disassociated the union from any brawl, saying the crisis was due to age-long communal clash.

It added that the NURTW members neither partook nor supported the fracas as being made to believe in some quarters, adding that people should not link members of the union with the communal unrest.

The statement also said that the union remained a disciplined organisation that would not drag its reputable name through the mud, calling on the people to verify their claim.

It said members of the union had been educated on the need to maintain peace and avoid any act that could precipitate violence in any of its branches.

It urged the people of the state to disbelieve the speculation and go about their normal businesses without entertaining any fear.

The statement commended the state government and law enforcement agencies for quick actions, and called on the two communities to embrace peace in the interest of growth and development, adding that no society thrived in an atmosphere of rancour and uncertainty.
