Patigi: FG Gives Assurance of Total Rehabilitation of Flood Victims, Reconstruction of Infrastructure

Date: 2013-01-10

The Federal Government has assured flood victims across the country of its determination to reconstruct infrastructure damaged by the flood rehabilitation.

Mr Tunde Lemo, the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Chairman, sub-Committee of the Presidential Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation, gave this assurance in Patigi, Kwara, on Wednesday.

He said that the visit by members of the committee was aimed at carrying out an on-the-spot assessment of flood-affected areas in the state.

Lemo, who was represented by a member of the committee, Mr John Owoicho, said that the committee was preparing a comprehensive report on the causes of the flood to be submitted to the Federal Government.

He said that the report would be used by the government for the full rehabilitation of the victims and reconstruction of infrastructure.

"The long-term purpose is to reconstruct affected infrastructure and also resettle persons affected by the flood across the country and also embark on preventive measure against future occurrence."

Lemo said that the committee was meeting with development partners, the World Bank and UN agencies to solicit for support for victims. He said the relief materials provided by the committee was a palliative measure aimed at providing immediate succour for the victims.

Owoicho, who led the team, described the devastation caused by the flood as colossal and pledged more assistance from the Federal Government.

At the Palace of the Etsu of Patigi, members of the committee symphatised with the monarch over the incident.

Some of the places affected by the flood included Patigi, Paradogi, Satchi and Mawoji.

However, several of the flood victims who were camped at Mawoji on the outskirts of Patigi, had left when the team visited the camp.

The Etsu Patigi, Alhaji Ibrahim Umar thanked both the Federal and Kwara government for their prompt response to the plight of victims.

The Chairman of the state Flood Disaster Committee and the State Head of Service, Alhaji Mohammed Dabarako, called for the continuous dredging of the River Niger to put an end to the annual flooding. (NAN)
