Kwara Women Advised to Resist Political Exploitation Ahead of Local Government Elections
According to a news report from Nigerian Tribune, women have been urged to avoid being exploited by politicians for campaign-related activities in the lead-up to the scheduled local government elections in Kwara State on 21st September.
The Ibolo Consumers Advocacy of Nigeria, a non-political and non-governmental organisation dedicated to protecting and advocating for the rights of consumers in Offa, Oyun local government areas of Kwara State and across Nigeria, issued this statement. The group highlighted that women are major active participants in the electoral process and are susceptible to exploitation.
The organisation also advised men to refrain from compromising their futures by accepting food and gifts.
According to one of the leaders of the group, Engineer Tajudeen Iwalola, he said that any political party that relies on godfatherism should be rejected. “Instead, voters should support candidates committed to genuine service and community development”, he said.
The group commended President Ahmed Tinubu, the Senate, the National House of Assembly, and Attorney General Alhaji Lateef Fagbemi for their dedication to advancing democracy and good governance in Nigeria, especially, for the support and instrumental role in making local government autonomy a reality.
“Additionally, we commend Alhaji Chief Lateef Kunle Ajeigbe, Arebobaselu Offa and Coordinator of the Offa Stakeholder Forum on his recent statement, regarding the status of Offa Local Government over the past six years.
“His willingness to speak the truth is vital for improving our society. It is through such transparency and honest discourse that we can work together to create a better future for all.
“As we look forward to the benefits of this autonomy, we appeal to all eligible voters to be vigilant and discerning when selecting local government leaders. It is essential to prioritize candidates who demonstrate.”
