Displaced Victims of NNPCL Demolition in Kwara State Seek Compensation
According to a news report from Channels TV News, over 5,000 displaced victims of the demolition exercise carried out by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) in Kwara State have appealed for compensation.
The incident, which took place in March 2018 along the Oke-Oyi, Tanke pipeline road to Babaode, Ilorin, Kwara State, has left many without homes and livelihoods.
During a press conference in Ilorin, the victims, led by their representative Tope Ajetunmobi, expressed their frustration. He noted that despite a resolution from the 8th House of Representatives in May 2019 urging NNPCL to assess the value of the affected properties and negotiate with the victims, the company has largely ignored this directive.
Ajetunmobi highlighted that NNPCL has only responded to 3 out of 17 invitations extended by the House of Representatives from the 8th to the 10th sessions. The demolitions have resulted in significant losses of lives and properties for the affected individuals.
The victims have now appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene and ensure they receive compensation in light of the current economic realities in the country.
