Former Kwara First Lady Leads Awareness Walk Against Breast and Cervical Cancer

As reported by Leadership, the immediate past First Lady of Kwara State, Omolewa Ahmed, organised an endurance walk on Saturday to raise awareness about breast and cervical cancers among women. Leading several women and groups around the Ilorin metropolis, the state capital, Ahmed highlighted the importance of early detection and prevention of these life-threatening diseases.

Speaking with journalists during the awareness campaign, Ahmed, who is also the founder of the LEAH Foundation, stated that she initiated the campaign in 2016 when it became clear that many women were not sufficiently informed about the severe consequences of these terminal illnesses.

She said that the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) had reached out to people in the hinterland in its bid to sensitize those at the grassroots, adding that her passion for womenfolk started 13 years ago while in office, “I was able to zero in on the crusade against cancer”.

“This is a calling for me. It's my ministry. That is why it has survived my office as the First Lady”.

She urged Nigerians to act on awareness and campaigns on health issues, saying that people should ensure proper adherence to awareness tips on their general health especially instances that can lead to

Ahmed also advised women to take their physical being more seriously than daily chores, saying, “that is why we have been going even to the local governments to preach against breast cancer. We want to, at all cost, avoid mortality stage.”

She also said that her project sponsored a Nollywood movie (Diamond in the sky), featuring Omowunmi Dada, to promote the war against the deadly cancer.

The Nollywood actress, Omowunmi Dada, said that she accepted to play the lead role in the film because of her belief and poise for womanhood.

She encouraged girl-children and women to always go for cervical cancer screening.
