Kwara Government Emphasizes Early Tax Education for Sustainable Economic Growth

According to a report from the Independent, the Kwara State government stressed the importance of educating Nigerians early on the need to fulfill tax obligations, commending the Kwara Internal Revenue Service (KWIRS) for its innovative tax club quiz competition.

Saadatu Modibo Kawu, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, praised KWIRS's initiative, describing it as a positive step toward nurturing a generation committed to tax compliance and civic responsibility.

Kawu further noted that early tax education is essential for fostering sustainable economic growth and creating future opportunities for young people in the state.

On Thursday, Government Day Secondary School Ga' Akanbi emerged victorious in the 2024 annual KW-IRS tax club quiz competition.

The school outperformed five other secondary schools in the grand finale, securing a total of fourteen points.

The competing schools included Anglican Boys Academy Oro, Eucharistic Heart of Jesus Model College, Government Secondary School Lafiaji, Kwara State College of Education Model Secondary School Oro, and Shepherd Secondary School Lafiaji.

Government Day Secondary School Ga' akanbi was awarded a prize of Two million, five hundred thousand naira (N2.5m) for their exceptional performance.

Government Secondary School Lafiagi claimed the second position, receiving a prize of One million, five hundred thousand Naira (1.5m), while Eucharistic Heart of Jesus Model College secured the third position and was awarded One million naira (1m).

During the grand finale of the 2024 Tax Club Quiz Competition, Funmilayo Oguntunbi, Convener of the KWI-IRS Tax Club Advocacy Committee (TACAC), highlighted that 154 schools initially applied through online registration in June.

Following a rigorous selection process, 12 schools qualified for the semi-finals, eventually narrowing down to six schools for the grand finale in October.

Shade Omoniyi, Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS), emphasized the use of Computer-Based Test (CBT) during the preliminary stage, integrating technology to enhance the competition and improve the students' skills.

Kwara's Governor Abdurahman Abdulrazaq commended the initiative, stating that the competition aligns with the government's commitment to investing in education.

He stressed the importance of educating youths on taxation fundamentals to ensure future compliance and understanding.
