Summit University, Offa, Nigeria, Wins 2024 Global E-STEM Award

Date: 2024-12-11

Summit University, Offa, has been honoured as one of the recipients of the prestigious 2024 Global E-STEM Awards, presented by Pratt & Whitney in collaboration with the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE). The Global E-STEM Awards celebrate excellence and innovation in E-STEM (Environment, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) initiatives, supporting organisations that engage students aged 11 to 22 in STEM-related topics.

Summit University's award-winning project, titled Democratization of Environmental Literacy in Post-Primary Educational Institutions in Nigeria (DELitE), is designed to democratise environmental education in Nigeria through an open-access, culturally relevant curriculum. By integrating STEM principles, multimedia resources, and co-creation spaces, the project will promote hands-on learning and problem-solving to build sustainable futures. With an estimated reach of 14,000 learners, DELitE aims to inspire action among university students, secondary school learners, and community stakeholders.

The DELitE project will empower learners to address real-world environmental challenges using case studies and project-based learning. Participants will tackle community-specific issues such as pollution measurement and control, clean energy generation, and climate change adaptation. By integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, the programme encourages innovative, data-driven approaches to problem-solving. This experiential learning method bridges theoretical knowledge with practical application, fostering creativity, teamwork, and collaboration among participants.

The DELitE project is supported by strategic collaborations with prominent institutions, including the Federal University of Technology, Minna; Lofty Gems School, Lagos; and the Institute of Innovative Technology, Ibadan. These partnerships aim to enhance environmental literacy by integrating STEM disciplines with environmental studies. Through co-creation spaces, learners will gain practical STEM experience, deepening their understanding of scientific methods and the technologies used in environmental research.

Multimedia resources developed under DELitE project will cater to diverse learning styles, making complex STEM concepts accessible and engaging. The project will emphasise experiential learning to equip participants with critical thinking, analytical, and collaborative skills—essential for careers in the environmental sector. DELitE's training sessions and stakeholder engagement activities will provide valuable networking opportunities, connecting learners with mentors and potential employers in the environmental field. By empowering participants to contribute to pollution control, renewable energy innovation, and climate adaptation, Summit University's DELitE initiative is poised to make a lasting impact on environmental literacy and advocacy in Nigeria.

Summit University continues to lead in STEM advocacy, recently securing approval to offer nine cutting-edge Bachelor's and postgraduate degree programmes in STEM. Over the past few months, the University has introduced several scholarship opportunities for prospective students, with some still open for applications on its website.

Through these initiatives and its impactful research grants, Summit University is solidifying its leadership in STEM education across the country. Aspiring students are encouraged to visit the University's website to explore available scholarship opportunities and embark on this transformative academic journey.
