Police Begin Enforcing Third-Party Vehicle Insurance Across Key States

Date: 2025-02-03

The police commands in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kwara, Delta, and several other states have commenced the enforcement of third-party motor vehicle insurance, in accordance with the directive issued by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

According to the police, all vehicle owners must possess a valid third-party insurance policy before using their vehicles on public roads.

Drivers who do not have any form of insurance have been urged to obtain coverage immediately to avoid facing penalties.

A statement yesterday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Josephine Adeh, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said the insurance is a mandatory policy designed to protect road users from financial losses in case of accidents.

Adeh said: “It covers the damages caused to another person's vehicle, property, or bodily injury resulting from an accident involving the insured vehicle. This policy ensures that accident victims receive necessary compensation while reducing the financial burden on vehicle owners.

“The FCT Police Command warns that non-compliance with this legal requirement will attract strict enforcement measures. The enforcement is part of efforts to ensure adherence to road safety regulations and protect all road users.”

Also, Adeh said Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu directed officers assigned to carry out the enforcement to be professional, courteous, and firm.

She added: “The general public is urged to cooperate with the police as this enforcement is aimed at ensuring the safety and security of all road users in the FCT.
