Super Eagles Captain Praises League Uptick in Fair Play, Calls for Pitch Improvements
Super Eagles captain and Kano Pillars skipper Ahmed Musa has praised the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) 's officiating standards in the 2024/2025 season, noting the rise in away team victories as a sign of improved fairness.
Speaking at a media briefing organised by the Kwara State Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) ahead of the Matchday 28 clash between Kwara United and Kano Pillars at the Rashidi Yekini Main Bowl in Ilorin on Sunday, Musa commended the consistency of refereeing decisions. However, he also highlighted the need for better playing surfaces across the league to enhance match quality and player safety.
The veteran striker, who led Kano Pillars in the game, acknowledged the progress of the NPFL while stressing the importance of addressing infrastructure challenges to maintain competitive standards.
"I think our league is flourishing with good officiating now, and this is evident in the number of away victories. The standard this season aligns with global best practices, earning the league the respect it deserves in African football."
However, the former Leicester City and Al-Nassr forward raised concerns about the quality of some playing surfaces and urged the league body to improve them.
"I only have reservations about some pitches. The league body should work more on improving them to enhance the quality of play."
Musa, who was visiting Ilorin for the first time, was also impressed with the sports facilities at the George Inih Stadium.
"For the first time, I've seen a stadium where all sports can be played without hindrance. I only hope the government continues improving on such facilities."
His remarks highlight the growing reputation of the NPFL and the need for continuous infrastructural development to match its officiating standards.
