Kwara State Cracks Down on Illegal Roadside Parks Citing Security Risks in Ilorin

Date: 2025-07-31

Kwara State Government has launched a robust enforcement campaign against illegal roadside parks and garages in Ilorin, declaring unlicensed operations a critical security threat to public safety.

Spearheaded by Engr. Mashood Babalola, Chairman of the Taskforce Committee on Motor Parks and Garages, the crackdown commenced on Wednesday with immediate effect. Babalola, representing Transportation Commissioner Hon. Lafia Aliyu Korasabi, stated: "Unauthorized parks disrupt traffic flow and endanger commuters' lives and property. This infiltration of illegal operations must end."

The initiative follows a recent recertification drive for 12 licensed motor parks, aimed at eradicating unethical practices in the transport sector. Babalola expressed frustration over persistent violations: "Despite prior sensitisation and engagement with transport unions, some operators continue flouting regulations, jeopardising certified garages and public welfare."

All unauthorised parks and travel logistics operators must obtain certification within the stipulated timeframe or face legal prosecution and operational shutdowns. The state reaffirmed its commitment to structured urban mobility and citizen security through this enforcement drive.

He emphasized, "The state government recently inaugurated the taskforce committee to ensure strict adherence to transportation regulations for the safety of all commuters."

The Kwara State Government reiterated its appeal for transporters to adhere to established operational guidelines, eliminate illegal loading points, and promote safe-driving practices within approved garages.

Throughout the enforcement exercise, the taskforce faced resistance from some defaulters, with reports of assaults and threats aimed at officials. However, these incidents were effectively managed due to the presence of State Police.

The Transportation Taskforce Team conducted inspections at various strategic locations, including Post Office/Taiwo Isale, Ajase-Ipo road, and Olunlade/Offa garage axis. The operation proved largely successful, resulting in the apprehension of several defaulters and the impounding of five vehicles.
