KWEPA Orders Restaurants to Halt Illegal Wastewater Discharge Amid Health Hazard Warning

Date: 2025-07-31

The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has issued a stern warning to all restaurants and food vendors across the state to immediately cease illegal wastewater discharge into public drainage systems, citing severe public health and environmental risks.

During an inspection tour of Ilorin's major eateries, KWEPA General Manager Honourable Jide Aina revealed that numerous establishments were improperly releasing effluent into open drains, causing environmental degradation and foul odours in residential areas. The agency's task force documented repeated violations despite prior sensitisation campaigns.

Aina mandated that all food service operators must install wastewater management systems including soakaways or retention tanks and ensure all discharged water is treated with approved chemicals. "Illegal discharge contaminates our waterways and endangers communities," he stated. "Non-compliance will attract prosecution under the Kwara State Environmental Management Law."

The directive forms part of KWEPA's intensified enforcement drive to uphold sanitation standards ahead of the rainy season, with unauthorised outlets facing fines and operational suspension.

"This practice is not only irresponsible but illegal. Any establishment found flouting environmental regulations will face strict sanctions," Aina asserted.

He, however, urged residents to support KWEPA's initiatives by reporting any environmental violations in their areas. Reports can be made through the KWEPA Whistleblower Number. 09114707577
