VDI Demands Person-Centred Healthcare for Kwara's Persons with Disabilities

Date: 2025-08-04

The Voice of Disability Initiative (VDI) has called for dignified treatment and disability-inclusive healthcare services for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Kwara State, urging healthcare providers to adopt a rights-based approach that prioritises individual needs over physical limitations.

During an interactive session in Ilorin focused on inclusive sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, VDI representatives challenged healthcare professionals from public and private facilities to move beyond accessibility barriers. Monitoring and Evaluation Lead Edward Ogiji stressed: "PWDs are not defined by their disabilities. Healthcare providers must see the person first and design services that respect their autonomy and dignity."

Focal Person Dr Oyelakin Ogungbade reinforced the demand, stating: "Policymakers, service providers, and society must recognise PWDs as integral members of our community. Their health rights including SRH access cannot be an afterthought."

The engagement, themed "Advancing Inclusive and Rights-Based Healthcare for Persons with Disabilities," highlighted systemic gaps in Kwara's healthcare infrastructure, where PWDs often face discrimination, inaccessible facilities, and inadequate provider training. VDI urged immediate integration of disability protocols into state health policies.

The session facilitator, Olufemi Oyedeji, who spoke on understanding disability and inclusive healthcare, SRHR needs, and barriers faced by persons with disabilities, said the inclusion of persons with disabilities was not a favour but justice.

At the event, healthcare personnel, Hajia Rukayah Yusuf and Mrs Ayoola Motunrayo, who represented the Primary Health Centre, Tanke, Ilorin, spoke on the importance of the session and said the engagement was highly refreshing and eye-opening.

While reflecting on the engagement, the chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Mr Adebayo Gbadamosi, and Mrs Joy Bolarin, the women leader of JONAPWD in the state expressed optimism that the session would yield better results.
