Kwara Police Condemn Lynching of Woman Mistaken for Kidnapper at Ipata Market
The Kwara State Police Command has condemned the act of jungle justice carried out on a destitute woman wrongly suspected of being a kidnapper at Ipata Market, Ilorin.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Command's spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi.
The incident occurred at the busy Ipata market around 9:00 a.m., when the woman, who was seen wandering, was falsely accused of kidnapping by misinformed members of the public.
An enraged mob attacked her, inflicting severe injuries. Police patrol teams intervened swiftly, rescued the victim, and rushed her to General Hospital, Ilorin, for emergency treatment.
Unfortunately, the attending physician confirmed her death due to the injuries sustained during the assault.
Her remains have been moved to the hospital mortuary as discreet investigations continue to identify those involved in the attack.
The command strongly condemned the act of jungle justice, stressing that it undermines the rule of law and endangers innocent lives.
Ejire-Adeyemi noted that mob action does not resolve security challenges but worsens insecurity and erodes public safety.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, urged citizens to remain calm and law-abiding and report suspicious persons or movements to the nearest police station.
He appealed to residents of Kwara to work with the police in promoting law, order, and justice, while firmly rejecting mob violence. (NAN)
