Kwara Police Debunk Viral Video Claiming Eruku Church Attackers Arrested
Police in Kwara have debunked a viral video circulating on social media which alleged that the bandits who invaded the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Eruku, in the Ekiti Local Government Area of the state, have been arrested.
The original attack saw at least 30 persons said to have been kidnapped and several others killed after gunmen invaded the church on Tuesday night.
A two-minute video, widely shared on WhatsApp and Facebook on Thursday, claimed that the attackers had been rounded up by security operatives less than 48 hours after the incident.
However, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, issued a statement on Thursday clarifying that the claim is "completely false," and urged the public to disregard it.
Ejire-Adeyemi stated: "The Kwara State Police Command is aware of a video circulating online claiming that the bandits who attacked church worshippers in Eruku community have been arrested. This information is completely false and should be disregarded."
She clarified that no arrest has been made so far in connection with the incident, even as security agencies intensify efforts to rescue the abducted victims.
She added, "The command wishes to state clearly that no arrest has been made yet in connection with the attack.
"Security agencies are actively conducting intensified operations in and around Eruku town to track down the perpetrators and ensure the safe recovery of the abducted victims."
Ejire-Adeyemi expressed concern over the speed with which unverified information spreads during crises, warning that such misinformation could fuel panic and hinder ongoing rescue operations.
"Members of the public are advised to desist from spreading unverified videos or claims capable of causing panic or misleading the community," she added.
