IBEDC Blames Prolonged Blackouts in Kwara and Oyo on Reduced National Grid Load Allocation

Date: 2025-12-17

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has formally acknowledged the persistent intermittent power supply and prolonged outages currently affecting customers across its franchise areas in Oyo, Kwara, Ogun, and Osun states.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the management expressed sincere regret over the significant disruptions caused to both residential households and commercial businesses. The company explained that the current challenge is primarily driven by a sharp reduction in load allocation from the national grid, which has severely restricted the volume of electricity available for distribution within its operational territory.

To address these systemic shortfalls, the company's management stated, "IBEDC is actively engaging the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Nigeria Independent System Operator (NISO) to improve supply stability." While these high-level discussions continue, the utility firm has implemented a temporary measure to manage the limited energy supply.

The statement further clarified that, "In the interim, available load is being strategically allocated and equitably distributed across feeders and service bands to ensure fairness and operational efficiency."

This strategic load shedding is intended to prevent total blackouts in specific regions while ensuring that all service bands receive a portion of the available power. The company has appealed for the continued patience of its customers in Kwara and other affected states as they navigate these grid-related constraints.

Concluding its message to the public, the IBEDC management noted, "We appreciate the patience and understanding of our customers and remain committed to keeping you informed as the situation evolves."
