Governor AbdulRazaq Urges Media Professionals To Uphold Accuracy And Ethics
The Kwara State Government has called upon media practitioners to maintain professionalism, accuracy, and responsible journalism, issuing a warning against reports that could undermine security and public peace.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq gave this charge in Ilorin during the official inauguration of Emirate FM 98.5, a privately owned radio station. He emphasised that the media continues to be a critical partner in promoting development and sustaining stability.
The Governor, represented by the Commissioner for Communications, Mrs Bolanle Olukoju, characterised the establishment of Emirate FM as a positive development that would further enhance the dissemination of information throughout the state. He provided assurances that the state government would persist in creating an enabling environment for private businesses, including media organisations, to flourish.
However, AbdulRazaq cautioned broadcasters and journalists against the use of sensationalism and the spread of unverified information. He noted that careless broadcasting could present significant security risks, not only to Kwara State but to the nation as a whole.
Also speaking at the event, the National Coordinator of the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, described the inauguration of the station as a landmark achievement that would enhance public enlightenment and education.
Abdullahi urged media organisations to avoid fake news and narratives capable of projecting the state and the nation in a negative light, advising practitioners to be guided by truth, fairness and responsibility.
In his remarks, the founder of Emirate FM 98.5 Ilorin, Abdulazeez Arowona, said the station was established out of a passion for journalism and public service, assuring that it would operate in line with professional ethics and contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of Kwara State.
