Kaiama Massacre: 102 Confirmed Dead, 75 Given Mass Burial as Emir Declares Worst Attack in Nigerian History
The Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Omar Muazu, has confirmed that at least 102 persons were killed in Tuesday's bandit attack on Woro and Nuku communities, with 75 given mass burial according to Islamic rites while others were transported to their home towns for interment.
Describing the carnage as the worst massacre in Nigeria's history, the monarch said Woro has now become a ghost town, with an unspecified number of women and children abducted.
He disclosed that the bandits had earlier sent a letter to the community claiming they were coming "to preach," only to launch a devastating attack upon arrival.
The Emir further revealed that the same group had previously kidnapped two Chinese nationals and killed a soldier, and appealed for the immediate establishment of a permanent military base in Kaiama and around Kainji Lake National Park where the terrorists are hibernating.
During a condolence visit to the community on Wednesday, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved the immediate deployment of a full battalion of soldiers to the area.
The Governor vowed that major military operations would be launched to ensure the safety of citizens, declaring: "the bandits have murdered sleep, and they shall be met with full force."
Troops of the Nigerian Army and forest guards have already been deployed to the affected communities to restore calm and forestall further attacks.
