Crisis Deepens at Kwara Poly as Rector's Suspension Sparks Tension

Date: 2026-02-19

The suspension of the Rector of Kwara State Polytechnic, Dr. Abdul Jimoh Mohammed, has once again drawn public attention to the institution's long history of management crises and student unrest since its establishment 53 years ago.

Dr. Mohammed was asked to step aside on January 26, 2026, following a students' protest linked to a clash of academic activities with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation programme. His suspension has since generated tension within the polytechnic community and sparked calls for his reinstatement.

Although not the first time a rector's tenure would be cut short at the institution his predecessor, Alhaji Mas'ud Elelu, also had his tenure truncated over alleged tenure extension issues the latest development has reignited debates about governance and leadership at the polytechnic.

The controversy began after students, who had just resumed from the Christmas and New Year break, were directed by the management to proceed on another three-week break. The measure was to allow NYSC members to use the campus facilities for their orientation programme.

The relocation of corps members to the polytechnic followed a proactive decision by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq last year to move them from their permanent orientation camp in Yikpata, Edu Local Government Area, due to security concerns and reported kidnapping incidents in the area.

The temporary use of the polytechnic's facilities for the NYSC exercise reportedly led to a clash of programmes, prompting student protests that culminated in the rector's suspension.

However, investigations suggest that the protest may not have been the sole factor behind the decision. Sources indicate that underlying grievances among some governing council members and staff over Dr. Mohammed's leadership style may have contributed to the action.

Allegations of favouritism had earlier trailed the institution's 2021 promotion exercise, with claims that the rector adjusted the promotion cut-off mark from 50 percent to 70 percent and that certain staff were elevated based on loyalty to particular groups. The situation reportedly bred discontent among staff members.

The institution's Public Relations Officer, Halimat Garuba, however, maintained that the suspension was strictly related to the students' protest. "I'm not aware of any other reason," she said.

Meanwhile, pressure groups have begun appealing to the governor for the rector's reinstatement. One such group, Ojagboro/Ipata Youth Progress, described Dr. Mohammed's leadership as instrumental to academic stability, infrastructural development, and improved administrative discipline. In a statement signed by its Secretary, Ibrahim Habibullahi Ndagozan, the group urged the governor to reconsider the suspension.

In the interim, Governor AbdulRazaq has appointed Dr. Awolola Felicia Olabisi as Acting Rector of the polytechnic. She is expected to assume office immediately and oversee academic and administrative activities during the period of investigation.

Dr. Olabisi has been tasked with ensuring seamless academic operations, engaging stakeholders, and maintaining a safe and productive learning environment.

With the institution temporarily shut for three weeks and investigations into the protest ongoing, stakeholders await the outcome, as the future direction of leadership at the polytechnic remains uncertain.
