NPFL Fines Kwara United N10m, Docks Three Points Over Security Breaches

Date: 2026-02-20

The Nigeria Premier Football League has imposed heavy sanctions on Kwara United FC over serious breaches of league regulations during their rescheduled Match Day 22 fixture against Rivers United FC.

The Ilorin-based club was found guilty of failing to provide adequate and effective security, which led to unauthorised persons gaining access to restricted areas.

In accordance with league rules, Kwara United was fined N2 million for inadequate security and N1 million for failing to control its supporters. An additional N2 million fine was imposed for assaults on match officials and Rivers United officials, alongside N1 million for unsporting conduct.

The club will also pay N1 million for holding match officials and Rivers United staff hostage for several hours after the match, and N2 million as compensation for treatment and damages.

Beyond the financial penalties totalling N10 million, the NPFL ordered a deduction of three points and three goals from Kwara United's accumulated tally.

Additionally, the club has been directed to play its remaining home fixtures at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena.

The match, which ended 1-1, was marred by violence shortly after the final whistle. Unruly elements reportedly stormed restricted areas and allegedly attacked top league officials, including the Chairman of Chairmen of the NPFL, Chief Okey Kpalukwu, as well as officials of Rivers United.

The incident has heightened concerns about crowd control and stadium security in the domestic league, particularly during high-stakes fixtures.

Eyewitnesses described the situation as serious, with security personnel struggling to restore order as officials and members of the visiting delegation were escorted to safety.

Kwara United condemned the attack, distancing itself from what it described as the actions of "irrational elements," and pledged to identify and bring those responsible to justice.

"We deeply regret the distress caused to all parties involved and extend our sincere and unreserved apologies to Chief Okey Kpalukwu, the Rivers United delegation, match officials, security personnel, and innocent spectators affected by these deplorable events," the club said.
