Kwara Government Warns Against Noise Pollution, Threatens Legal Action

Date: 2026-03-20

The Kwara State Government has issued a stern warning to residents and organisations against noise pollution, stating that violators will face legal sanctions.

The Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, gave the warning on Tuesday whilst reacting to complaints from various communities over rising noise levels across the state.

In a statement issued by the Press Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Muritala Shakirat, the commissioner emphasised that there are approved noise limits which must not be exceeded.

"It is imperative that all residents are aware that there are acceptable noise levels in Kwara State. Any individual or organisation that exceeds these limits will be treated as an offender and penalised accordingly," the statement read.

Buge noted that excessive noise poses serious health risks and urged residents, particularly adherents of both the Muslim and Christian faiths, to comply with the regulations.

"Our findings have shown that excessive noise is harmful to health. We appeal to members of the public to adhere strictly to the guidelines and encourage others to do the same," she said.

She added that the warning was particularly important at a time when nighttime religious and social activities tend to increase.

The commissioner assured the state that enforcement officers were available to guide individuals and organisations on compliance.

"Our officers are accessible to provide support in regulating noise levels in facilities where such activities are carried out, to ensure operators do not violate the law," she said.

Buge advised operators of facilities that generate high noise levels to install soundproofing measures to meet regulatory standards.

She reiterated that the permissible noise level in the state is 55 decibels during the day and 40 decibels at night.

The commissioner also congratulated Muslim faithful ahead of the end of Ramadan and the forthcoming Eid celebrations.
