Unilorin Don advocates review of academic grading system

Professor Isaac Olakanmi Abimbola of the Department of Science Education, University of Ilorin has advocated the jacking-up of grading system at all levels of education, saying that this would aid production of competent graduates in the country.

Professor Abimbola who made the call while presenting his paper titled, “The misunderstood word in science, towards a technology of perfect understanding for all,” at the 123rd inaugural lecture of the university, explained that first class grade should be 90-100, second class upper 80-89, second class lower 70-79, third class 60-69 while pass should start from 50-59.

“The general overhaul would encourage all categories of students to positively change their attitude to their school work while their teachers learn how to grade student’ work in the new system.

Professor Abimbola urged the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund) to resume its training programmes in the study of technology by making it available to all higher institutions across the country.

He however advised teachers to communicate correct information to students through well written instructional materials, while also encouraging teachers across the country to submit themselves to promotion examination as it is done in Kwara, Bayelsa Osun and Ekiti states.

He called on Federal and State governments to resuscitate teachers’ bursary in order to encourage brilliant students develop interest in studying education courses in universities.

The university don also appealed to teachers and examiners to increase the variety of work given to students as exercise or test in order improve the standard of education, while advising parents to provide rich environment where quality self-instruction can take place.

According to him, teachers and examination bodies should stop giving questions with options to examinees.

Prof. Abimbola advised Admission and Matriculation Board to incorporate Aptitude Test as the fifth subject in its Tertiary Matriculation Extermination, stressing that this would encourage candidates to prepare effectively.

The Professor called for proper funding of Quality Assurance Units of the Federal, State Ministry of Education and Local Education Authorities in order to enable them perform effectively.
