Kwara Police Dismantle Kidnapping Syndicate, Arrest 7 Suspects, Recover Firearms

Date: 2026-06-10

The Kwara State Police Command has dismantled a kidnapping network operating across parts of the state, arresting seven suspected members of the syndicate and recovering firearms during coordinated intelligence-led operations.

On 28 May 2026, operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad launched a targeted operation following credible intelligence on the abduction of a resident in the Agbeyangi area of Ilorin. The operation, designed to rescue victims and disrupt the criminal network, led to the arrest of one Surajo Abubakar, whose interrogation provided critical leads for further breakthroughs.

Acting on the intelligence gathered, police arrested Umar Yabani, also known as "Yabo," identified as the alleged leader of the syndicate, alongside Isah A. Sule and Umar Sani. One AK-47 rifle and a pump-action gun were recovered during the operation.

Preliminary findings linked the suspects to multiple kidnapping incidents across Ilorin East, Edu, Ifelodun and surrounding communities in Kwara State.

Further intelligence-led follow-up operations conducted on 4 June 2026, in collaboration with the Forest Guard and local vigilante groups, led to the arrest of three additional suspects: Bello Alhaji Maidabo (25), Shehu Malami (23) and Riskuwa Babuga (18). They were apprehended in a forest near Tsaragi following sustained surveillance operations.

A locally fabricated single-barrel firearm loaded with two live cartridges was also recovered during the raid.

Investigators stated that the suspects are cooperating and providing information that may assist in rescuing victims still believed to be in captivity, as well as tracking other fleeing members of the gang.

The Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, CP Adekimi Ojo, stated that the operation reflects the strategic policing directives of the Inspector-General of Police aimed at dismantling criminal networks and strengthening public safety through intelligence-led policing.

He reaffirmed the Command's commitment to protecting lives and property, while urging residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information.

Further details are expected as investigations continue and rescue operations intensify.
