No Casualties as 12-Tyre Truck Loaded with Soybeans Overturns at Geri Alimi Roundabout
A 12-tyre truck loaded with soybeans overturned at the Geri Alimi Roundabout in Ilorin on Tuesday, causing heavy traffic congestion along one of the busiest routes in the Kwara State capital.
The truck was travelling from Olam Company's facility at Asa Dam to Ogbondoroko in Asa Local Government Area when it reportedly lost control and flipped over at the roundabout.
No injuries were recorded in the incident. The driver escaped unhurt, while no other road users were affected.
The accident, however, caused significant disruption to traffic, forcing motorists travelling from Mandate Market towards Asa Dam to divert through Odota Road.
Traffic officials temporarily directed vehicles to make U-turns in a bid to ease congestion around the Geri Alimi axis while efforts were made to clear the scene.
Emergency traffic management measures were immediately activated to restore the free flow of vehicles.
Speaking after the incident, the visibly distressed driver described the accident as a major financial setback.
"This is a huge loss for me. I am already in debt running into millions of naira. I'm only a hired driver, and now the truck is badly damaged. More than 50 bags of soybeans burst open during the crash. I thank God for sparing my life and for ensuring that no one was killed," he said.
Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and officials of the Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) were at the scene to manage traffic and supervise the removal of the overturned truck.
The incident resulted in several hours of traffic congestion, causing delays for commuters and motorists using the route.
