Victims abducted during the deadly attack on Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State have arrived in Ilorin following their rescue after spending several months in captivity.

The victims arrived in the state capital late Thursday after regaining their freedom through a coordinated rescue operation involving the military and other security agencies. They were transported from Niger State to Ilorin and received at the Nigerian Army's 2 Division Headquarters, Sobi Barracks.

After their arrival, the rescued victims were moved to a secure location, while some were taken to hospital for medical evaluation and treatment following their prolonged stay in captivity.

The victims were among residents abducted when armed attackers invaded Woro earlier this year, killing scores of people and forcing many others into the surrounding forests. The attack sparked widespread concern and prompted intensified security operations to secure the victims' release.

The rescued victims are expected to be formally received by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who has maintained close engagement with security agencies throughout the rescue efforts.

Authorities are also expected to complete the verification of the number of rescued victims while providing medical care, psychological support and other welfare services to aid their recovery and reintegration.

President Bola Tinubu welcomed the successful rescue of 308 abducted persons from Kwara and Niger states, describing it as the largest single-day rescue operation carried out by Nigerian security agencies.

According to the Presidency, 163 of the rescued victims were abducted from Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, while 145 others were rescued from Niger State. The victims were freed during an intelligence-led operation conducted in the Kainji Lake National Park Forest by the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force.

The President commended the security agencies for the successful operation and reaffirmed his administration's commitment to strengthening security, improving intelligence gathering and protecting vulnerable communities across the country.

The attack on Woro, which occurred in February, left more than 150 people dead, according to residents, while many others were abducted. The assault destroyed homes and displaced several families, prompting the Federal Government to deploy additional military personnel to the affected area.
