Govt, Group Differ on Kwara Development
A group, Kwara Leadership Caucus on Tuesday said government should not only be responsible to or acceptable by the people but its political power should come from popular will.
It also said its formation was in response to the need to lead Kwara State out of alleged decades of misrule and embarrassing underdevelopment.
In a statement on Tuesday by its Protem Chairman, Mr. Iyiola Oyedepo, and Protem Secretary, Alhaji Tunde Mohammed, the group said it would provide a platform that would fix the economy of the state, redefine the political relationship of the component units and create a new state that would be a pride of all Kwara residents.
It added that there was the need for unity or integration of the political class that desired a change of the status quo.
The group said, “It is noted with sadness that the pervasive nature of poverty in all the nooks and crannies of the state is a product of the endemic corruption, profligacy, highhandedness and the lack of vision that have been the hallmark of governance in the state.”
But the Senior Special Assistant to the Kwara State Governor on Media and Communication, Dr. Muyideen Akorede, said the state government had impacted positively on the lives of the residents.
He stated that it had provided massive infrastructure, adding that those who claimed that there was no development in the state were not in touch with the current situation in the state.
“I categorically reinstate that this government has achieved and would continue to achieve. The fact that the ACN is claiming that the government had not achieved showed that it is not conversant with what is happening in the state. If they are in touch with what is happening in Kwara State, they would know that we have rehabilitated 400 classrooms and primary and secondary school levels.
“They would know that we have rehabilitated 800 kilometers of urban roads. They would know that the government has recorded many developmental efforts in the state. People can get access to quality healthcare are very cheap amount.”
