IG Vows to Arrests Killers of Kwara CP

Date: 2013-03-12

The Inspector-General of Police (IG), Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, Monday vowed to track down the killers of the slain Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chinwike Asadu, even as he pledged his readiness to equip the intelligence arm of the Nigerian Police to enable it respond effectively to crimes and criminalities in the country.

The vow by Abubakar, however, came on a day the Federal Government sent a delegation, led by the Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Capt Caleb Olubolade, to the Amorji-Nike home of the slain CP to commiserate with the family.

But the IG, who vowed to track down the perpetrators of the heinous crime, added that the killers of Asadu have murdered sleep and would never sleep.

“CP Asadu was an officer and a gentleman, we have worked together, he did his best in rendering service to this country. It is a hard one for us, something we can't comprehend up till now; like I said before the killers have murdered sleep. They will never sleep, by the grace of God. We shall find those killers so that the family and the police will be comfortable, on behalf of the Nigerian police accept our condolence,” he said.

Abubakar disclosed that several arrests have been made but, however, declined to give further details as he simply said: “Very soon, we shall find the killers. I don’t want to break the egg but we are on it.”

However, the Federal Government delegation, which was received by Asadu’s brother, Mr. Ogechukwu Attama, later met with the widow and the son of the deceased.

Speaking during the visit, Olubolade described the late Asadu as “a highly professional police officer, adding that it was shocking for him to be lost in such a questionable circumstance.”

Among those on the entourage of the minister include the IG, the Speaker of House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, who represented by the chairman of the House Committee on Police Affairs, Hon. Usman Kumo; and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Senator Igwe Nwagu.

Meanwhile, Abubakar, who used the opportunity of his visit to the state to inaugurate the Police Intelligence School located at the Police Detective College, Enugu, also inaugurated the inaugural training of Inspectors and rank and file on basic intelligence course at the school.

Addressing journalists after the exercise, Abubakar said the college was a departmental school of intelligence that is supposed to take off in Kwara State in couple of months, but because of the determination of the police to tackle the intelligence challenge of the force, it had to take off albeit on an interim measure in Enugu.

“We believe in capacity building and training programme, and intelligence is key to every policing all over the world and therefore, the Nigerian Police cannot be left behind. So we’ll do everything to ensure that this college is given all that is required to get in terms of structures and in terms of facilities,” he said, while dispelling insinuations that the take off of the Intelligence School in Enugu may not be unconnected with the recent killing of a police commissioner in the state.

“What we are trying to do is to make sure we are not stagnated by the fact that the Intelligence school is supposed to be in Kwara State. This is just a department of it. As soon as the college is built up and properly ready to take off, this will shift to Ilorin. This detective college will continue to discharge its own responsibility of training prosecutors and investigators for the Nigerian Police and other services,” he noted.

The IG, who refused to talk about the cost of setting up the school, stated that: “It’s not important; what's important is that this school is there and it’s supposed to be there for the good people of Nigeria.

The IG on arrival at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport drove straight to the Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu where he visited the injured orderly of Asadu.

He also went to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku Ozalla, where the other police officer, who was equally shot along with the slain CP is currently receiving treatment.
