The House of Representatives Committee on Education has commended the University of Ilorin for its accomplishments in the areas of academic excellence, efficient system of administration, environmental beautification, infrastructural development and sustained high ranking among universities in the world.
Chairman of the committee, Hon. Shehu Garba, made the commendation during a visit to the the university on Tuesday, as part of its oversight tour of Federal Government educational institutions.
After an inspection tour of projects on the campus, Garba said, “as a Nigerian I am very proud to be at the University of Ilorin.
“I graduated close to 30 years ago and I am worried by what has become of the standard of education in our country since then. But, for me, from what I have seen, I feel hopeful and elated that in the midst of the decay, we have an institution of excellence with very beautiful infrastructure.
“I believe that it is not just the beautiful infrastructure, we are all aware of the ranking of the University of Ilorin in the comity of universities in the world.
“You are one of the few universities in the country that is often mentioned outside Nigeria as a centre of academic excellence. “So, I feel very proud seeing things for myself and I must commend the Vice-Chancellor and his able team for the good things they are doing.
Garba explained that they were in the school to know how the university was faring with regards to the utilisation of capital allocation from the Federal Government and how the institution has been able to generate revenue internally and how it has been using this to supplement its running cost.
“We want to see areas you are having challenges and see how we can be of help.
“Our visit will help the House of Representatives to determine if the funds appropriated are judiciously used and if there is need to make case for greater funding,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulganiy Ambali, said that the University of Ilorin was fortunate to be one of the universities targeted by the Federal Government for special intervention through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
“Staff and students of this university are committed, dedicated and hardworking such that in the last 10 years, we have never had any disruption in our academic calendar.”
