LG Poll: Ahmed Charges KWASIEC on Equity

Date: 2013-05-25

Kwara State governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, on Thursday, charged members of the newly constituted state Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC) to utilize their wealth of experience in conducting credible elections in the state.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the five-man commission chaired by Dr. Uthman Abdulrahman Ajidagba, Ahmed said there is a need to strengthen the commission  for the onerous task of conducting council polls.

Other members of the commission are Barr. Abdulrafiu Ajao, Azeez Akinlami, Ishola Abdulraheem Ajibade and Barr. Abdulsalam Ahmed.

The tenure of the incumbent chairmen is expected to elapse in October while fresh elections are to be conducted into the 16 local councils.

The governor opined that credible election was critical to good governance especially in the third tier of government which is the closest to the people and charged the commission to follow due process as well as make equity, transparency and accountability their watchwords.

He said, “As you are no doubt aware, credible elections are critical to good governance. As the tier of government closest to people, local government elections are vital because the right choice at that level will have an immediate impact on our people and sustain confidence in our democracy.”
