Ganmo crisis claims councillor, 2 others.

Date: 2013-06-21

KWARA State police command has said about three people, including a serving councillor, have, so far, been killed in a renewed communal crisis in Ganmo community, in Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state.

It will be recalled that two traditional rulers of Ganmo and Ganna had been laying claims to the traditional stool of the area, which falls on Ilorin on one hand and Igbomina (Kwara South) on the other, as youth in the area clashed over the ownership of the stool, leading to loss of lives and property in January.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the councillor's throat and two arms were chopped off and taken away by his assailants, on Tuesday.

It was also gathered that rampaging youths allegedly torched the palace of the Oluganna of Gana during the renewed crisis, which reportedly started on Monday.

The state police command confirmed that the councillor was killed on Tuesday, adding that two more people were killed on Wednesday.

Speaking with journalists in Ilorin, on Thursday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Olufemi Fabode, said the two traditional rulers laying claim to the throne had been invited for interrogation.

The PPRO said the issue of renewed violence prompted the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Agboola Oshodi- Glover, to summon the two traditional rulers to his office and warned them to call their subjects to order.

The PPRO also said the command had drafted its men to the two towns to maintain law and order.

The state government had earlier warned that the full weight of the law would be brought to bear on anyone or group that violated the ongoing peace process in Ganmo.

In a statement, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Sola Isiaka Gold, said all relevant issues surrounding the disputed Oniganmo stool remained suspended until the final determination of all pending court cases on the traditional stool.

Meanwhile, the Anambra State police command has arrested one Francis Beluchukwu Nwoye, who possesses six prohibited pump action guns and six double barrel guns in his residence at Nkwele Ezunaka, Oyi Local Government Area.

It was reliably gathered that the police acted on the alarm raised by some members of the community, who had been at a cross with the man said to be the chairman of the local vigilance group.

The man was, few days ago, arrested at the Nteje magistrates' court premises where he was standing trial on a-two-count charge of conspiracy and robbery.

He was, on Wednesday, dragged before a Federal High Court sitting at Awka over a 12-count charge of possession and control of 12 prohibited firearms.
