Opinion: Governor Ahmed's First Term or Governor Bukola's Third Term?

Since the election of Governor Ahmed of Kwara state on May 29th, 2011, there have been various arguments that the governor is not really the one in charge of affairs of governance in Kwara state. In as much as it is not easy to believe this assertion, there various indicators to suggest that this is the norm in present Kwara politics. Immediately after the inauguration of governor Ahmed and it was time to make political appointments, it was said that Senator Saraki drew up and approved who gets what in terms of political posts.

There is also insinuation that Senator Saraki determines and supervises the distribution of the monthly allocation of kwara state. I find it hard to believe this allegation but when I came across an interview granted by governor's Ahmed senior special assistant on media and communication, Dr.Femi Akorede, where he said ‘there is a cow(kwara allocation?) that need to be milked for the teeming people to drink. But somebody has to hold that cow. So that it can be easily milked. Saraki is holding the cow, while Ahmed is milking the cow for the benefit of Kwarans.' My concern is, are Kwarans really getting the milk? Must someone have to hold the cow for Governor Ahmed? Who held the cow for Senator Saraki when he was the governor? I believe the one holding the cow controls the game because he can decide to pull the cow by the horn and this will definitely affect the flow of the milk or put a stop to it totally.

I watched the recorded video of the controversial Nigerian Governors forum election where governor Ahmed was begging the governor that was recording the election to stop it. I can understand his concern. Here is a governor that is afraid to incur the wrath of his political godfather by not voting for Ameachi and also afraid of the presidency hammer by not voting for Jang who is seen as the presidency's candidate. Thank God for governor Kwankwanso who let us know that our governor voted for Ameachi, even though, he attended the meeting called by governor Jang. I pity and understand his predicament in this respect. He has to follow the interest of his godfather, Senator Saraki who is believed not to be in the good books of the presidency due to his perceived presidential ambition.

In all the 36 states, the governors are regarded as the leader of their political party but the reverse is the case in Kwara state where Senator Saraki is regarded as the leader of the ruling PDP in the state. This can be attested to by the press conference called by National Assembly members from Kwara state led Senator Shaba Lafiagi, where they affirmed that Senator Saraki is leader of the ruling PDP party in the state.

Therefore, it is pertinent to ask Kwarans; is Governor Ahmed serving his first term in office or Senator Bukola Saraki's third term in office as governor by proxy? God bless Kwara.
