Unilorin Don advocates compulsion of religious studies in secondary schools

A Professor of Comparative Religious Studies, Oyeronke Olademo has called on Federal Government to make compulsory the study of religious studies at secondary school level b y reversing its optional policy.

Professor Olademo who made the call at the One hundred and Thirty sixth Inaugural lecture of the institution, titled “the parades of love: women and Religion in society” explained compulsion of the studies would enhance building of a formidable foundation in young minds against corruption.

The professor described education as a central to development which capable of strengthening the nation due to its influence on ability of human to reason, communicate and make informed choice about their lives.
Speaking on the role of women in building religions, the professor urged orthodox churches, especially the Anglican Communion to begin the process of women ordination into the priesthood.

Olademo explained that female interpretation and understanding of scriptures should be accorded with respect and appreciated with the aim of moving women’s issues from the periphery to the center of discourse in the study religions in Nigeria.

According to her, women scholars should be encouraged through sponsorship to conferences and postdoctoral programme in a bid to integrate the formal and non-formal model of education to address the challenges facing the relationship of women and religion.
