Two charged with murder of UITH medical officer

Two persons, Abiodun Abdulmalik, 23 of No. 23 Meduku Street, Sango Area and Akeem Afolabi, 31 of No. 4, Ayodele Adogun Street, Egbejila Road both in Ilorin, have appeared before an Ilorin Magistrate Court for the murder of a former Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Dental Association of Nigeria, Dr. Adewunmi Ariyo, who was a staff of the University of Ilorin  Teaching Hospital (UITH), Ilorin.

The accused were dragged before the court on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and culpable homicide.

The accused allegedly on April 18 shot dead the deceased at his residence, No. 27, Harmony Street, Basin Road, Ilorin, after which they ransacked his house and made away with valuable items.

Items allegedly carted away by the accused are a Honda Accord EOD car with registration number AAA 685 AU belonging to the deceased wife, valued at N1, 800,000, two Blackberry Bold 2 and Bold 6 mobile phone valued at N95,000, and a Samsung Galaxy handset, valued at N80,000, a plasma television set valued at N130,000, jewelry valued at N300,000 and a set of Sonny sound system valued at N85,000 and other valuable properties.

According to the Police First Information Report (FIR) on the matter, the Blackberry Bold 2 mobile phone belonging to the deceased were recovered from one Nafisat Kolawole through forensic information.

The FIR added that further investigation conducted at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Ilorin, also led to the arrest of one Ojulari Gafar, who sold the stolen handset to the woman's boy friend, Adewumi Kayode (a.k.a k-shanky).

The FIR added further that the accused confessed to the crime and a locally made double barrel pistol used in the commission of the offence with four live cartridges were recovered from the accused upon their arrested in Ogbomoso, Oyo State on 28/05/2013, immediately after the commission of another armed robbery offence by them.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Zaccheaus Folorunsho, objected to the bail of the accused and urged the court to remand them at SARS custody, Ilorin to enable detailed investigation.

The trial magistrate, Mr. Abdulraheem Bello, who refused to take the plea of the accused, remanded them at the SARS custody, Ilorin, until July 18 when the matter would come up for further investigation.
