'Fracas, gross democratic degeneration'
The Speaker, Kwara State House of Assembly, Mr. Razak Atunwa, has described as gross democratic degeneration, Tuesday's fracas in the Rivers State House of Assembly.
He spoke in Ilorin on Thursday while addressing executive members of the state chapter of the Congress of Nigeria's Political Parties, who paid him a courtesy visit.
Atunwa said such a crisis was "a slippery slope to chaos and anarchy", if allowed to degenerate. He cautioned politicians against taking to violence as a means of resolving crisis.
He said, "Currently, the Rivers State House of Assembly is embroiled in rancour, and this is a gross degeneration of democratic principles, where honourable members are at loggerheads over self-interest, one way or the other.
"It's to be condemned in its entirety that honourable members will storm a House of Assembly. For whatever reason, the best way to proceed is to adopt the course of dialogue.
"Where there is a political difference, I'm sure there should be dialogue to resolve the political differences. Resulting into violence is to be condemned and shunned by the politicians across the federation.
"It's something that would pain everyone. It is also a slippery slope to chaos and anarchy if we allow such a thing to carry on."
