Kwara judiciary swears in LG election petition tribunals
The Kwara State judiciary yesterday sworn-in two separate Local Government Election Petition Tribunal for the 2013 local government polls.
The tribunals which consist of three members each were charged with the responsibility of resolving petitions that might emaciate from the conduct of the elections.
The members of the first tribunal include Chief Magistrate Moses. O. Adegbite, the chairman: Hon R.O Bakari and Barr. Daud Gidado
The Second tribunal members include Chief Magistrate Ibrahim Mohammed, Chairman: Hon D.A. Olorunishola and Barr. O.S Ogidiolu.
The State Chief Judge (CJ), Hon. Justice Ayinla Olatunji Bamigbola who presided over the ceremony said the tribunals were constituted in line with section 98 of the Kwara State Local Government Election Law 2004 as Amended under Kwara State Law No. 3 of 2010.
According to the CJ, the section requires the constitution of the tribunal within 2 weeks to the date of any Local Government Election in the state.
"The Local Government election in Kwara state is to commence on 31st of August, 2013 with the Offa local government, this Tribunal is put in place to entertain petitions that may arise from the Elections", the CJ said
"He described members of the panels as people of integrity and of impeccable character who will discharge their duties without fear or favour and who would not abuse the confidence reposed in them.
The CJ, charged the newly sworn-in members to abide by the oath of office and the laws governing the tribunal, particularly the amendment to section 105 of the Kwara State local Government Electoral law which has given time limit for hearing of petitions with 120 days.
"This informs our having to constitute two panels so that petitions are disposed off speedily," the CJ said.
Responding on behalf of the Tribunal, Chief Magistrate Moses O. Adegbite assured that the panel would do everything possible to ensure that the image of the judiciary is not tarnished.
Adegbite who said that the tribunal is aware of the enormous nature of the job, promised not to abuse the confidence repose on them.
