Rectors urge FG to improve funding of federal polytechnics

Date: 2013-08-22

Some Rectors of the Federal Polytechnics on Wednesday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, called on the Federal Government to fund the nation's higher institutions to enable them produce qualified graduates.

They said that government needed to give priority to technical education to reduce the rate of unemployment in the country.

The rectors are in Ilorin for the 126th Regular Meeting of Council of Heads of Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology (COHEADS).

They said the government should give necessary support to the institutions to produce graduates that can stand the test of time.

Usman Saleh, the Rector, Federal Polytechnic, Damaturu, lamented that the universities recently established by the Federal Government were not well staffed and funded.

Mathew Idowu Ajibero of the Kogi Polytechnic said what the nation needed now was funding of the existing institutions not new ones.

The Rector of Delta Polytechnic, Jacob Obore, however, said that the nation still needed more institutions to cater for the large number of students.

He said the number of the institutions was not sufficient enough to cater for the teeming students seeking for admission.
