Kwara CP warns against illegal campaigns, unguarded comments

Date: 2014-01-14

The Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, Mr. Agboola Oshodi-Glover, has warned politicians in the state not to commence political campaigns until 90 days to election day as contained in the Electoral Act.

Oshodi-Glover spoke with journalists in Ilorin on Monday after a meeting with leaders of political parties in the state and  the parade of 11 suspects.

He also  urged the political leaders not to make unguarded statements, engage or cause any action that could jeopardise security of lives and property in the state.

Warning them against violence and thuggery, he reiterated that there should be no political rally for now, except in their party offices and their homes.

He directed politicians to write the police for necessary permission before organising political events.

The CP also said four suspects -Dele Cletus, Adekunle Ishola, Simony Ogundeji and Dare Suleiman- had been arrested for armed robbery.

He stated that items recovered from the suspects included one Toyota Corolla car marked Lagos FE 464 APP, valued at N1,7m; three sharp cutlasses, three motorcycles; unregistered Daylong; unregistered Qlink and  a Bajaj motorcycle with number plate EKY 607 QC and two  guns.

According to him, the case had been transferred from ‘E’ Division Police Station, Kunlende Ilorin to the State Criminal and Investigation Department,  Ilorin for discreet investigation.

Oshodi-Glover  added that seven suspects had also been nabbed  in connection with last Thursday’s disturbances at Baboko area of Ilorin, Kwara State, which led to the death of Babatunde Sulaiman.

He stated that the police recovered from the suspects six cutlasses, one spear, one sword, and matches, a gallon of petrol, unregistered Jetta Volkswagen car, charms and amulets.

The police commissioner said, “On January 9, 2014 at about 12.20 am, hoodlums numbering over a 100 were heard by residents of Baboko area of Ilorin shouting “kill them and destroy them. They fired guns and shot indiscriminately. Before the arrival of policemen, cars, houses and properties values yet to be estimated were
destroyed.

“One Babtunde Sulaiman, male, 18 years died as a result of the injuries he sustained in the course of the fracas. In the process of investigation, it was discovered that the crisis arose as a result of argument over a girl friend between two opposing groups of miscreants known as Adabata OPC and Baboko Boys. The case is still under investigation.”
