Why Nigeria records low development - Labour leader

Date: 2014-08-28

Director-General of Michael Imoudu National Institute of Labour Studies (MINILS), Ilorin, Dr Niyi Olanrewaju, has blamed Nigeria’s low level of development and productivity on constant friction among principal actors in the nation’s industrial relations.

Speaking at a four-day workshop on leadership, problem-solving and decision-making methodologies for Kogi State public service joint negotiating council in Ilorin on Tuesday, Dr Olanrewaju said principal actors in industrial relations like employers, employees represented by the unions and the government must work together, even if they had diverse interest.

“Without peace there cannot be productivity, development and progress. So, it is in the interest of all parties that they come together and work as development partners,” he said.

Dr Olanrewaju, who also said that an effective public service was a change system that supported government policy in any society, added that public service should not be a dormant place where routine things were done.

The labour trainer, who said that workers were the engine room of any government or organization, added that transformation would occur in any society when capacity and potential of labour force was developed.
